apprehend

'prehend'는 'to seize(잡다)'라는 뜻의 어근이다.

① 이해하다 (무엇인가를 손에 '쥔다'는 것은 곧 '이해한다'는 은유적 의미도 지닌다) 
② 체포하다, 붙잡다

apprehensive
염려하는 (앞으로 불길한 일이 벌어질 것이라는 예감을 붙잡고 있다는 뜻이다. 따라서 근심, 두려움, 초조함과 같은 심리상태를 묘사한다) 

To apprehend a confusing news story is to understand it, but to apprehend a thief is to nab him. 
혼란스러운 신문기사를 붙잡는 것은 이해하다는 뜻인 반면, 도둑을 붙잡는 것은 체포하다는 뜻이다.
