purgatory

purg는 'to clean or cleanse 청소하다, 세척하다'라는 뜻의 어근이다. 

purgatory 연옥, 일시적으로 고통을 겪는 장소나 상태

단테는 'The Divine Comedy'에서 'Purgatory is the place where the soul is cleansed of all imipurities (연옥은 영혼이 불결함을 모두 깨끗하게 씻어내는 곳이다)'라고 묘사했다. 가톨릭교리에서 연옥은 영혼이 천국에 올라가기 전 거쳐가는 곳으로, 이곳에서 생전에 저지른 죄의 대가를 치른다.
