이 표현의 유래를 설명하는 가설은 꽤 많지만, 가장 설득력 있는 가설은 항해와 관련이 있다. 고대 바이킹 신화에 따르면 고양이는 폭풍우에 영향을 끼치는 동물이고 개는 바람의 상징이었다. 고대 스칸디나비아에서 폭풍우를 관장하는 신 오딘은 개와 늑대에 둘러싸인 모습으로 자주 등장했다. 이 때문에 초창기 선원들은 폭우 때마다 비가 오는 원인은 고양이이고 바람은 개 때문에 분다고 생각하게 되었다. 따라서 고양이와 개로 인해 비가 온다는 말이 모든 형태의 폭우(또는 억수, 세차게 쏟아지는 비)를 가리키게 되었다.

억수가 퍼붓기 시작해서 우리는 재빨리 피크닉 짐을 챙겨 자리를 떠야 했다. 

jurisdiction

dict는 'to speak 말하다'라는 뜻의 어근이다. dictionary는 '말' 하는데 필요한 단어들을 모아 놓은 보물창고이다. '반대하는'이라는 의미의 접두어 contra가 붙은 contradict는 어떤 말에 대해 '반박하거나 부정하다'는 뜻이다.

jurisdiction은 사건을 어떤 법원에서 심리하고 어떤 법집행기관에서 관여할지 결정하는 권한을 의미한다. 흔히 '사법권' 또는 '관할권'이라고 번역한다.

But although they may seem like mere technicalities, jurisdictional matters sometimes turn out to be all-important in the final outcome.
사법권은 단순히 절차적 문제에 불과한 것처럼 보이지만 최종판결에 매우 중요한 영향을 미치기도 한다. (어느 법원, 어느 수사기관에서 사건을 처리하느냐에 따라 형량이 달라질 수 있기 때문이라고)

the straight and narrow

어떤 사람들은 성경이 계시된 하나님의 말씀이라고 한다. 그렇다면 하느님이 영어를 하셨다는 이야기가 된다. 심지어 미국의 어떤 단체는 킹 제임스 성경이 하나님이 인간에게 계시하여 준 것이라고 믿어서 매년 한 차례 다른 성경들을 쌓아놓고 불태우는 행사를 성대하게 벌이기도 한다.

킹 제임스 성경이 그보다 100년 전에 나온 마일스 커버데일의 성경에 비해 훨씬 더 정확했던 것은 틀림없다. 마일스 커버데일은 원칙적으로 성경은 영어로 번역되어야 한다고 믿었던 초기 개신교도였다. 그런데 아무도 그 일을 하지 않으니 본인이 직접 나서기로 했다. 라틴어도 그리스어도 히브리어도 아는 게 없었지만 그런 사소한 문제 따위는 무시하고 용감히 나섰다. 

그래도 독일어는 조금 알았고, 마침 개신교를 창설한 독일에서는 이미 성서의 독일어 번역 작업을 진행하고 있었다. 커버데일은 작업에 매진해 시편을 번역해냈고, 오늘날까지도 영국 성공회에서는 그 역본을 예배에 사용하고 있다. 하지만 커버데일 역본은 미려하지만 정확성이 크게 떨어진다. 예컨대 이런 구절이 실려 있다.

The strange children shall fail, and be afraid out of their prisons.
이상한 아이들이 망하여, 감옥 밖에 나와 두려워하리로다. 

아름다우면서도 묘한 글귀이다. '이상한 아이들'이란 과연 누구일까? 왜 이상한 걸까? 그리고 왜 감옥에 있었을까? 그 답은 다음의 올바른 번역을 통해 확인할 수 있다.

The foreign-born shall obey, and come trembling from their strongholds.
이국 백성들이 복종하여, 벌벌 떨며 요새에서 기어 나오리로다.

하지만 커버데일의 오역 중 최고로 꼽을 만한 것은, 시편 105편에서 요셉의 목이 쇠사슬에 매이는 장면을 묘사한 부분이다(his neck was put in iron). 문제는 히브리어에서 '목'과 '영혼'을 뜻하는 단어가 똑같다는 것이다. nefesh라는 단어는 대개 목이나 목구멍을 뜻하지만, 우리가 목구멍으로 숨을 쉬기에 '숨'을 뜻하기도 하고, 생명의 숨이 곧 영혼이므로 '영혼'을 뜻하기도 한다. 같은 이치로 spirit(영)과 respiration(호흡)도 같은 라틴어에서 유래했다.

커버데일이 그 문장에서 그 점만 착각했다면 "His soul was put in iron" 정도로 끝났을테지만, 커버데일은 두 번째에는 주어와 목적어도 뒤바꿔 해석하여 기상천외한 문장을 만들어놓았다. 그 결과는 "The iron entered into his soul"이었다.

그래도 그 구절은 별문제가 되지 않았다. 히브리어 원문과는 동떨어진 뜻이었어도, 워낙 심상이 강렬했기에 반응이 좋았다. 오역이건 아니건 상관없었다. 귀에 듣기 좋았으니까. 

그런가 하면 제대로 번역된 성경 구절이 영어 독자들의 오해를 사기도 한다. 오늘날은 strait라고 하면 보통 'Straits of Gibraltar(지브롤터 해협)' 같은 해협을 가리킨다. 하지만 strait는 '좁은, 꽉 끼는'을 뜻하는 형용사였음을 알 수 있다. 비유적으로 '꽉 막힌 사람'은 strait-laced라고 한다. 또 좁아서 지나가기 힘든 문은 strait gate이다. 그 중에서도 가장 좁은 문은 '천국으로 가는 문'일터. 

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way,
which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
생명으로 인도하는 문은 좁고 길이 협착하여 찾는 이가 적음이라.

'올바른 길, 정도'라는 뜻을 가진 표현 'the straight and narrow'가 사실은 'the strait and narrow'의 잘못이라고 하는 건 그래서이다.
